The Huayhuash Ruta Alpina is an exhilarating and demanding high-altitude trekking route in the Peruvian Andes, known for its stunning alpine scenery, challenging passes, and remote, untouched landscapes.

Itinerary

  • Departure: Early morning departure from Huaraz.
  • Transport: Drive to Cuartelhuain (approximately 6 hours).
  • Altitude: Cuartelhuain at 4,100 meters.
  • Highlights: Scenic drive through the Andean landscapes, setting up camp in Cuartelhuain.
  • Trek Distance: 12 km.
  • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours.
  • Altitude: Cacanapunta Pass at 4,700 meters; Mitucocha at 4,270 meters; Janca at 4,150 meters.
  • Highlights: Crossing the Cacanapunta Pass with views of Ninashanca and Rondoy, camping by Laguna Mitucocha, and continuing to Janca.
  • Trek Distance: 14 km.
  • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours.
  • Altitude: Alcay Punta Pass at 4,740 meters; Laguna Carhuacocha at 4,150 meters.
  • Highlights: Trekking over the Alcay Punta Pass, with stunning views of Yerupajá and Siula Grande, descending to Laguna Carhuacocha.
  • Trek Distance: 13 km.
  • Trek Duration: 7-8 hours.
  •  Altitude: Siula Pass at 4,850 meters; Huayhuash camp at 4,350 meters.
  • Highlights: Challenging ascent to the Siula Pass, breathtaking views of surrounding peaks, and camping at Huayhuash.
  • Trek Distance: 11 km.
  • Trek Duration: 6-7 hours.
  • Altitude: Trapecio Pass at 5,050 meters; Laguna Juraococha at 4,343 meters.
  • Highlights: Crossing the high Trapecio Pass with panoramic mountain views, camping by Laguna Juraococha.
  • Trek Distance: 12 km.
  • Trek Duration: 7-8 hours.
  • Altitude: Seria Punta Pass at 5,050 meters; Laguna Caramarca at 4,575 meters.
  • Highlights: Ascending Seria Punta for grand vistas, trekking to the serene Laguna Caramarca.
  • Trek Distance: 16 km.
  • Trek Duration: 7-8 hours.
  • Altitude: Rasac Pass at 5,150 meters; Laguna Rasac Cocha / Jahuacocha at 4,100 meters.
  • Highlights: Climbing over the Rasac Pass, descending to the beautiful Laguna Rasac Cocha or Jahuacocha, surrounded by towering peaks.
  • Trek Distance: 14 km.
  • Trek Duration: 5-6 hours.
  •  Altitude: Rondoy Pass at 4,750 meters; descent to Huaraz at 3,100 meters.
  • Transport: Drive from Llamac to Huaraz (approximately 5 hours).
  • Highlights: Final ascent to the Rondoy Pass, with last views of the Huayhuash range, descent and return to Huaraz.

  • Camping equipment: Mountain tents (2 people per tent), mattresses, dining tent, kitchen tent, dishes and kitchen utensils, tables and chairs.
  • Guide: Certified trekking guide.
  • Cook: Trained cook to prepare varied and healthy dishes.
  • Arriero: In charge of loading the donkeys and driving them.
  • Donkeys: You can carry up to 5 kg of personal items that will be loaded onto the donkeys. During the day you will only carry your personal backpack.
  • Emergency horse: 1 horse will accompany the group in case of emergency.
